Google’s first Pixel smartphones were not just smartphones as the case may be but they were demonstration that Google was more than just a software giant.

The Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL were among the first devices to highlight what’s new and notable in Android 8.0 Oreo. The Google Pixel 2 XL packs in a sharper display and a bigger battery, while also promising robust performance.

The Google 2 XL is the bigger, more attractive version of the Google Pixel 2. The Google Pixel 2 XL has a few distinct advantages over the smaller Pixel 2 — its battery life is much better, and Android Oreo shines on its bigger screen. Google’s new phones have managed to further the Pixel’s reputation for Android excellence.

Google Pixel 2 XL Key Specs & Features

• 6.0-inch P-OLED Display, 1440 x 2880 pixels (538ppi)
• Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 CPU with 4GB RAM
• Android 8.0 (Oreo)
• 64GB or 128GB built-in Storage
• 12.2MP Rear Camera and 8MP Front Camera
• 4G LTE Data (up to 800Mbps download)
• Fingerprint Scanner (Rear)

Design and Display

The Google Pixel 2 XL feels like plastic and the device has an aluminum unibody. The use of aluminum also ensures the phone’s incredibly light in weight. The aluminium body has a textured coating that keeps fingerprints at bay and also aids grip.

You can reach the fingerprint scanner easily with your index finger on the back. Google has opted for a P-OLED technology from LG and promises better image quality.

The Pixel 2 XL has an 18:9 display with rounded corners. Its display is covered with 3D glass and with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 it is also protected from scratches and cracks. The Google Pixel 2 XL boasts features a high resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and this translates into about 538 ppi pixel density for very sharp images.

It should be noted that the Google Pixel 2 XL has a dust and water resistance rating of IP67, which means that it can survive up to 30 minutes of being submerged in up to 1m of fresh water. However, this additional life-proofing is definitely a welcome addition but taking a dip with a Pixel in hand is a lousy idea. In fact, it can certainly survive accidental drops into a bathtub or toilet bowl, or exposure to rain.

It’s available in all black or an attractive black-and-white combo where the body is white and the “visor” top glass section is black.

Camera

The Google Pixel 2 XL camera is likely to be the key reason why a lot of buyers opt for the Google Pixel 2 XL. The Google Pixel 2 and  Google Pixel 2 XL share the same 12.2-megapixel single-sensor rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera.

The rear camera can record video at up to 4K resolution, uses a combination of laser and phase-detection autofocus. It can also record slow-motion video at up to 240fps.

The front camera records video at up to full-HD resolution. The camera uses both optical and electronic stabilization to help avoid jankiness or sluggishness, resulting in a smoother image.

Hardware and Software

The Pixel 2 XL is one of the first new smartphones to ship with the latest iteration of Android 8 Oreos and it has the same solid performance that the Google Pixel 2 promises. The Google Pixel 2 XL use the high-end octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM and the Adreno 540 GPU. It is available in 64GB and 128GB options, with no option to add more storage with a microSD card.

Google will be supporting the Pixel 2 XL for three years, which means you’re assured fresh Android servings through to 2020. That means buyers can expect to enjoy upgrades until 2020!

Other Features

The Google Pixel 2 XL carries a bigger 3,520mAh battery, compared to its predecessor, Google Pixel 2 and comes supplied with a charger that can output power at up to 18W.

Google Pixel 2 XL also features a reversible USB Type-C port that you can use for charging and audio. The Google Pixel 2 XL has all connectivity options you can expect at this price range, including NFC and speedy dual-band Wi-Fi.

Verdict

The Pixel 2 XL aren’t flashy but when it comes to the software, camera and performance, the Google Pixel 2 XL delivers well. The camera is among the best you can find on an Android smartphone.

You may not get a better Android experience on any other smartphone, as the stock Android Oreo experience offered by the Google Pixel 2 XL is superior in every way. The Pixel 2 XL is a bigger, more elegantly designed machine, with a gently curved glass panel draped over its 6-inch P-OLED display.
